Greening Mandera
ince the launch of ‘Greening Mandera’ by Governor Ali Roba, over 60,000
trees have been planted in the county, greatly transforming major urban
Scentres in the county.
The ambitious project has seen trees planted along streets, major highways
and public institutions, in turn offering employment to over 270 vulnerable and
needy individuals who have been tasked with nurturing and watering the trees
on a daily basis.
Of the 270 employees engaged in the project, 95% are women, most of them
working at the county headquarters where more than 4,500 trees were recently
planted to supplement over 30,000 trees planted earlier.
The Greening Mandera initiative continued to flourish when the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources welcomed its key National Government
partner to kicks-tart a tree planting programme at Mandera Technical Training
Institute following the onset of the short rains mid-last year.
The event was graced by Deputy Governor Mohamed Arai, who prom-
ised to fully support the initiative as he emphasised the administration’s
commitment to turn around the county’s afforestation plan as outlined the
Greening Mandera initiative. More than 200 seedlings were planted during
the well-attended function as the residents pledged to fully support the
exercise.
The team from the National Government visited Hola, Garissa, Wajir and
concluded their mobilization with Mandera.
The event was attended by senior county government officials led
by the Ministry’s County Executive Committee Member Mohamed Ali
Maqar, Township MCA Adan Maalim Abdullahi other and residents of
Mandera who promised to continue planting more trees.
