Mandera Marks World Breastfeeding Week 2025 with Renewed Commitment to Maternal and Child Health

The County Government of Mandera today joined the global community in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week 2025, observed annually from August 1st to 7th.

This year’s theme, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” highlights the urgent need for long-term, coordinated investments across multiple sectors to empower mothers and support infants throughout their breastfeeding journey.

Despite increasing awareness of the health benefits, many mothers in Mandera continue to face cultural barriers and widespread misinformation about breastfeeding.

To address these challenges, the county government is intensifying efforts to improve breastfeeding practices by:

  • Training healthcare workers and community health promoters.

  • Enforcing the Breastfeeding Act 2019 as passed by the County Assembly of Mandera.

  • Monitoring breastfeeding indicators to track progress and inform policy.

The event was presided over by the CECM for Public Service Management, Hon. Nadifa Ahmed, and the CECM for Public Works, Hon. Amina Hassan, in the presence of senior officials from both the National and County Governments.

Rural Agency for Community Development and Assistance (RACIDA) and Save the Children supported the celebration, underscoring the importance of collaborative partnerships in promoting maternal and child health.

By strengthening both community and health system support, Mandera County aims to ensure that every child receives the best start in life through optimal breastfeeding practices.
