10th May 2019
Today accompanied by the Deputy Governor H.E Mohamed Arai and other senior county officials, we held a consultative meeting with quarry stakeholders (quarry owners and operators). The meeting follows the recent court order that lifted the ban on quarry activities in Mandera County.
We agreed on a few modalities on how to conduct the quarry business going forward. Together with the town elders and the quarry association, we agreed for quarry activities not to be conducted beyond 4:00 P.M. All the quarry workers to be withdrawn from the sites by 4 O’clock.
In order to encourage the culture of self reliance, we agreed the quarry owners and operators to train local workforce to avoid over-reliance on non-locals.
Price regulation to avoid exploitation and introduction of levy fee for quarry owners license or imposition of a certain amount to be deposited with the government until the activity is complete was also part of our discussions. The deposit will cater for the environmental degradation caused that poses great risk to the residents leaving around the quarry sites.
I pledged to support the businessmen in raising the legal fees to handle the court cases as a result of the quarry closure.
Thank you and God bless you all!
Ramadhan Mubarak.
