On 16th November 2024, Mandera County proudly launched the Mandera United Women Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCO) Limited, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering women and fostering economic resilience.
Driven by over 500 determined women, this SACCO offers a platform for members to pool resources, save, access credit, and invest in ventures that enhance their livelihoods. Notably, two members based outside Mandera played a key role in establishing offices and exploring growth opportunities, demonstrating the unifying power of collective action.
Empowering Communities Through Cooperatives
Cooperatives are central to Mandera County’s vision for sustainable development. They promote financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and community resilience. Through the Department of Cooperative Development, the County Government has made significant strides in strengthening the cooperative movement:
1. Registering Over 200 Cooperatives: Mandera United Women SACCO is among the cooperatives that have gained legal recognition, unlocking access to funding opportunities.
2. Building Capacity: Members are equipped with vital skills in financial management, governance, and business development through targeted training programs.
3. Providing Technical Support: Continuous guidance in audits, strategic planning, and financial linkages ensures cooperative sustainability.
4. Enhancing Access to Funding and Infrastructure: Partnerships with financial institutions and development agencies have enabled cooperatives to secure capital and establish offices.
5. Modernizing Operations: Automation and digitization are streamlining cooperative services and improving efficiency.
