Mandera County has formally established the Mandera County Religious Council, a new multi-stakeholder body aimed at promoting interfaith harmony, peacebuilding, and countering violent extremism within the county.
The Council brings together representatives from registered religious organizations, the business community, youth groups, professional bodies, non-state actors, and a secretary delegated by the relevant county department, under the leadership of a chairperson.
According to the framework establishing the Council, its core mandate includes fostering dialogue and understanding among different religious groups, promoting tolerance and respect, and recommending standardized religious education programs that emphasize moderation, peace, and social cohesion in Madrasas across the county.
The Council will also conduct community awareness campaigns targeting youth and the wider public on the dangers of extremism and intolerance, establish youth leadership and civic engagement programs, and support counseling, rehabilitation, and deradicalization initiatives for individuals influenced by extremist ideologies.
In his remarks, Governor Khalif urged the Council to work closely with government agencies, law enforcement, and civil society organizations to address ideological extremism, evaluate counter-radicalization programs, and strengthen the capacity of religious leaders, imams, and community members to prevent radicalization.
