The County Government of Mandera has launched Phase II of the Yabicho A Irrigation Infrastructure Project, building on the success of the first phase implemented during the 2024/2025 financial year. Phase I brought 150 acres under irrigation, benefiting approximately 250 farmers.
The newly launched Phase II has expanded irrigation to an additional 100 acres, with 200 more farmers set to benefit.
The project is designed to protect the livelihoods of households affected by recurrent flash floods along the River Daua by expanding irrigation infrastructure and opening up more farmland away from flood-prone areas.
The initiative is expected to increase agricultural production and productivity, strengthen food security, and support the restoration of livelihoods through improved irrigation systems and sustainable farming practices.
The number of beneficiaries from both phases is expected to grow as farmers continue to expand irrigated farmland through the construction of additional earthen canals to distribute water to newly developed fields.
The project aligns with the Mandera County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP), Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), Vision 2030, the EAC Vision 2050, the African Union Agenda 2063 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 and 13, which promote sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.
Today, the project was officially handed over to the contractor in the presence of the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Bare Shabure, the Chief Officer for Irrigation, Abdiaziz Bare, alongside community members and other county officials.
