Two additional libraries in Lafey and Elwak also completed and ready for launch
MANDERA — The newly renovated Mandera Community Library has been officially handed over to the County Government of Mandera in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Robert Theuri, Chairman of the Kenya National Library Service (KNLS) Board.
The handover marks a major milestone in expanding access to modern public learning spaces across the county, coming alongside the completion of two additional libraries in Lafey and Elwak, both of which are now ready for launch.
The ceremony brought together key stakeholders, including Dr. Charles Nzivo, Chief Executive Officer of KNLS; Hon. Mohamed Ali Omar, County Executive Committee Member for Social Development; Members of the County Assembly; county officials; and members of the local community.
Speaking at the event, Bishop Theuri expressed gratitude to all partners whose contributions made the project a success, citing the collaboration between the National Government, the County Government of Mandera, the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund, the project implementation team, consultants, contractors, and KNLS management.
“Libraries have always been gateways to knowledge, learning, and opportunity,” Bishop Theuri said, emphasizing that such spaces must continue to evolve to meet the demands of the digital age.
A Tech-Enabled Learning Hub
In line with this vision, the renovated facility has been transformed into a modern, technology-enabled learning hub. The library now features advanced ICT infrastructure with high-speed Wi-Fi, assistive technologies for persons with disabilities, and full integration with the KNLS Virtual Library and the Koha Library Management System.
The facility also boasts an expanded collection of resources, including locally published books, educational toys, and games designed to promote early childhood literacy and support lifelong learning for residents of all ages.
A Product of Strategic Partnership
The renovation and expansion project began after the KNLS Board approved a funding request to the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund. The funding was secured in 2023 with support from the State Department for Culture, the Arts and Heritage.
The completed project stands as a testament to how strategic partnerships between national and county governments can successfully expand access to modern public learning infrastructure in Mandera County.
The County Government of Mandera reaffirms its commitment to investing in education, literacy, and digital inclusion for all residents.
