A UNICEF Kenya technical team, led by Dr. Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, Chief of the Garissa Zonal Office, and Dr. Oluwatosin Kuti, the RMNCAH Project Manager, met with H.E Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif and officials from Mandera County’s Department of Health Services to review the progress of the USAID-UNICEF Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) Equity Project.
The discussions centered on the project’s ongoing technical support and program monitoring. The RMNCAH Equity Project, funded by USAID and implemented in collaboration with the National Ministry of Health, USAID Kenya Mission, and UNICEF Kenya, has been running for a year in Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo Counties. It aims to address healthcare inequities and improve outcomes for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health as part of Kenya’s universal health coverage goals.
During their visit, the UNICEF team engaged with technical staff from both county and sub-county health departments, frontline health service providers, County Children’s Services, Civil Society Organization (Habiba International), community opinion leaders, and community health promoters. These engagements facilitated discussions on key social determinants of health affecting the well-being of women and children in Mandera.
The team further assessed the implementation progress of the RMNCAH Equity Project and developed actionable recommendations focused on strengthening health systems within the county. The discussions are expected to support ongoing efforts to improve healthcare service delivery and enhance the overall health outcomes for vulnerable populations in the region.
